Job Title: Backend Engineer Location: Birmingham, Hybrid (1 day per week in office) Salary: £50,000 - £70,000
We are working with a well-established retail and ecommerce business that is investing heavily into the growth and evolution of its internal technology function. Following the consolidation of multiple IT teams into a single function, the business is now building new platform capabilities and expanding its engineering team to support long-term growth.
This role sits within a collaborative engineering environment where developers are encouraged to contribute ideas, influence technical direction, and help shape the future of the platform. As a Backend Engineer, you will play a key role in developing and maintaining platform and integration capabilities across the business.
Key responsibilities include:
- Managing and improving platform and API hosting environments
- Building and developing backend services and integrations using Node.js and TypeScript
- Working within Kubernetes environments to deploy, manage, and scale containerised applications
- Supporting and optimising AWS-based infrastructure and services
- Ensuring platform reliability, stability, and scalability across business-critical systems
- Developing and maintaining microservices-based architectures and APIs
- Contributing to future platform strategy and identifying opportunities for new technical capabilities
- Collaborating closely with developers and technical leadership on architectural decisions
- Monitoring system performance and proactively resolving issues
- Participating in regular planning sessions and technical discussions within the team
- Commercial experience as a Backend Engineer, Platform Engineer, or similar role
- Strong experience with Node.js and TypeScript
- Hands-on experience working with Kubernetes in production environments
- AWS cloud infrastructure experience
- Strong understanding of APIs, integrations, and microservices architecture
- Experience deploying and managing containerised applications
- Ability to work autonomously and contribute to technical decision-making
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Forward-thinking mindset with an interest in improving systems and processes
Desirable experience:
- Experience scaling Kubernetes environments
- Background working within platform-focused engineering teams
- Experience within fast-paced ecommerce or retail environments
- Hybrid working with flexibility across two office locations
